Antique Shopping Finds | Winter 2021

Today I want to share with you my most recently collected antique and thrift store treasures. These antique shopping finds include a variety of items that we have added to our home for both decor and functional purposes.

With our cottage build complete, we have moved onto a new phase. Decorating! I don’t claim to be an expert interior decorator, but I do know what I like when I see it! With Pinterest picture references, I am constantly on the lookout for unique and special items to add to our rooms. Most definitely, I prefer a ‘collected’ look when it comes to home furnishings and decor. To me, spaces just look and feel more personal when the pieces in it have a story.

Although it may take me years and years to finalize the decorating of the cottage, I am up for the challenge!

My Antique Shopping Tips

I live in a town that is known as a bit of a tourist destination. In addition to its many lakes, it boasts a vibrant downtown area, complete with multiple antique stores. With all of these beautiful shops so accessible, it would be easy to spend hours each day shopping. However, I prefer to limit my browsing to every few months.

This spaced out shopping is helpful for a variety of reasons. First, it allows plenty of time for item turnaround. The workers at these antique shops are constantly attending estate sales and picking up items to resell. That means that if I step into the stores less often, I am more likely to see many new items each time. Secondly, in order to make room for new merchandise, items that haven’t sold in a couple of months may be offered at a discount. I have seen pieces drop in price over fifty percent from one outing to the next.

It is my preference to always shop with someone else. I generally do not enjoy shopping, even casually. Having another person with is more fun, because we can visit while walking through the stores. Many times, one of us will see an item that sparks a memory, which adds to even more conversation. In addition, if I am questioning whether to buy something or not, I can talk it over with my shopping buddy.

Shopping As A Minimalist

When designing our home, we purposefully made the decision to not include a lot of storage. We saw it as a way to ensure that the items we have are used on a regular basis. In addition to that, neither my husband nor I like clutter. For these reasons, we are very intentional about the items we bring into our home.

In order for something to ‘make the cut’, so to speak, it needs to be either useful/ needed or something we love to look at.

An item that is offered at a good price but is the wrong color, size, or shape will not be a purchase of mine.

I try to make it a habit of walking through a store first, without picking anything up. If something catches my eye, I will go back to it for further inspection. Many times I have left the store, with photos and measurements of an item in hand, and thought about it for a few days. If it is a piece that I can’t get out of my mind, I will go back to purchase.

Winter 2021 Antique Shopping Finds

Are you ready to see what I decided to bring home? Great! I’m excited to show you!

Enamel Top Table

First up is this white enamel topped table. Based on the construction techniques used, our best guess is that it is from the earlier part of the 20th century. Perhaps somewhere between 1910 and 1930, when having a small baking table in the kitchen was common practice.

vintage antique shopping enamel table

There is evidence suggesting that the table used to have two drawers. The drawer fronts are still present, but they have been nailed to the frame and the drawer boxes have been removed. My husband is thinking about re-creating the drawers. He also has plans to remove the paint (we think it is probably lead based) and refinish the wood legs.

enamel table

For the moment the table is being used as a surface for puzzles. In the future, I envision switching it out with the little red chippy table seen in my Christmas decorating post. Depending on the season and decor needs, both tables will come in quite handy.

Woven Basket

This little basket was found at a local thrift store for a few dollars. I’m not entirely certain that it is old, but it does appear to be hand made. I love all of the little details on this piece, including the ‘x’ shaped ties, and the teeny tiny pins around the top. At approximately 6″ x 12″ , it is the perfect size to hold a few books.

We have been keeping the basket next to the fireplace. It currently holds our family Bible and devotion materials, so that they are within easy access to pick up for a quick read.

Knit Throw

I am drawn to cozy, neutral textures. This cream colored knit throw caught my eye with its beautiful pattern and smaller size. It is not a full blanket, but it has just enough material to wrap up in.

After bringing it home and giving it a good washing, I layered it on the back of our couch. Atop another vintage blanket, the texture of the throw really pops!

Metal Spice Tins

I have recently started one of my very first collections. These little vintage metal tins are so fun, and each so unique. They were found in many different shops, at various price points ranging from one to five dollars. I find the font and color choices on each individual tin so interesting.

I have seen some very unique ways that vintage tins have been used as decor. My absolute favorite, and the thought that is guiding my collection, is to use them as little planters. By taking the tops off of the tins, I can fill them with soil and plant small succulents and spices of my own. Chives, cilantro, maybe a some dill? The large window ledge above our kitchen sink will be the perfect place to display them, during the spring and summer months.

Original Oil Painting

My absolute favorite recent find is this original painting. When I saw it, while shopping with my mom, it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the colors and composition immediately. The winter scene depicting children ice skating on a frozen pond reminded me so much of our own property here at Arrow Hill Cottage. However, the hefty price tag gave me pause, and I walked away. Once home, I did a bit more research on the artist because I was curious why the painting was priced so high.

It turns out that the painting was done by a local artist named Ellen Eilers. She is best known for her ‘Calico Country’ series of artwork, which includes various stylized landscape scenes. However, she mentioned in this video that she particularly enjoyed painting winter scenes. I believe that enjoyment was transferred to the canvas when she made this piece. The details are stunning!

After thinking about it for a few days, and with encouragement (and birthday money) from my parents, I happily went back to the store to purchase it. It fits just perfectly here at the cottage, and I am excited to enjoy it for years to come.

That’s everything for now! I hope you enjoyed these antique shopping finds. I’m hoping to do a post like this every so often, when I have new purchases to share. I always think it is fun to hear the stories behind some of the items that are in a person’s home, and I hope you do too!

SIMPLE FALL DECOR IDEAS

Gather inspiration from these simple Fall decor ideas. They will have you ready to celebrate the season!

harvest decorations

It’s officially Fall here in the Midwest! It honestly feels like there was a switch that turned the weather from warm and sunny to cold and rainy. The change just happened so suddenly!

Fall is probably my absolute favorite season of all, and I am genuinely bummed that I likely won’t be able to decorate this year. With the building of Arrow Hill Cottage nearing completion, our time is split between site visits, choosing finishes, and packing up the rental house. Add in school activities, and we essentially have no spare time anything for extra, including decorating!

But, if YOU have time to decorate, I have some ideas for you today! Though these ideas have been on the blog before, I thought they were worth another share. Click on the link below each picture to read more details about the decor.

SIMPLE LIGHT FIXTURES | Minimalist Home Lighting

In today’s post, I share the simple light fixtures we have chosen for our new home. The clean lines and basic color palette of these selections make them the perfect compliments for the minimalist home.

This has been a very exciting week at Arrow Hill Cottage. The interior framing is just about complete, the house wrap is on, the windows are going in, and the mechanical duct work has started! Now is the time to begin ordering the light fixtures for each room.

Over the past few months, I have been searching various websites and stores for simple light fixtures that would complement the overall feeling we are trying to achieve with our home. Classic, clean, and minimal, with a bit of a vintage industrial vibe.

INTERIOR LIGHT FIXTURES

We will be using quite a few canned light fixtures, especially in the open spaces – such as the dining/ living room and basement family room. However, in many of the other rooms there will be a need for various types of task lighting.

If you are interested in any of the light fixtures we have chosen for our home, be sure to click on the links below each picture!

Flush Mount Ceiling Fixture

This ceiling hugging fixture has sleek lines, and gives off a good amount of light. We will likely install in the downstairs office and possibly in the upstairs mudroom/ back entry space.

Semi-Flush Mount

In rooms where we want a bit of an upgraded look, we will be placing these semi-flush mount fixtures. The master bedroom will have one, as will the main floor powder room.

Dining Chandelier

We searched for a special light fixture to be used above our dining room table. This eight light pendant fixture is the perfect fit for what we were looking for. The linear design will mirror the long farmhouse style table we will be building custom, from trees felled on our property.

Vanity lighting

In the master, basement and upstairs bathrooms, this simple wall pendant will give just enough character. Using the same light fixtures in multiple rooms will help keep the continuity throughout the house.

We are also considering this fixture in a few locations around the house,  perhaps in one of the bathrooms.

Accent Pendant

This pendant will be perfect, hanging above our large cast iron sink in the kitchen. In such a clean and minimalist space, this accent will really shine.

Large Room Pendant

With the vaulted ceilings upstairs, we will be using larger pendants. These farmhouse style industrial pendants have long cords, which will bring the light lower into the room – allowing for better coverage.

Three identical pendants will be set upstairs. One for each bedroom, and one for the hallway space.

Master Bedroom Side Lamps

On either side of our master bed, we will be placing these swing arm lamps. Perfect while reading in bed!

Boys Sleeping Nook Lamps

In each of the boys sleeping nooks, they will have small reading lights as well. The multi-directional quality of these trumpet style lamps is really nice.

Closet lights

In the closets, we will be using smaller wall mounted fixtures. This is a bit of a splurge perhaps, as some of the closets really don’t need any lighting. However, the larger closets in the kid’s rooms will benefit from the extra illumination – especially in the dark storage space behind their hanging rods!

EXTERIOR LIGHT FIXTURES

The light fixtures for the exterior of the house will follow the same style as the interior of the house. There are two different styles we are going to incorporate. Barn lights, which will be placed in feature positions – above the front door and above the garage doors.

Minimalist Cottage | Virtual Tour

Join me today as I give a virtual tour of our minimalist cottage! This is the home we hope to spend the rest of our lives in, and we have worked diligently to design it to meet all of our needs, now and in the future.

simple cottage exterior

With framing in full swing, I thought it might be a good idea to do a quick virtual tour. This could prove helpful for anyone following along with our real life progress updates. I share day to day on Instagram Stories. And also give detailed updates every couple weeks on Youtube. It will be fun to look back and see how close to the original design intent the house ends up.

When this blog was originally started, about two years ago, we were under the impression that the house would be built within the first year. But, as you know, that wasn’t the case. And, though the delays were frustrating, I am able to look back with gratefulness for the extra design time.

DESIGN CHANGES

For reference, THIS is my very first post regarding the design of the house. It was quite a bit larger then. We realized fairly early on that we needed to make major square footage cuts to keep the budget in check.

In fact, it seemed that as time went on we continued to simplify the design MORE and MORE. But with each revision we became increasingly satisfied with the house. There hasn’t been a single change, or simplification, that we have regretted – including THIS surprise last minute revision that created a more open concept main level. Every single change has led us to where we are today.

open concept floor plan for a minimal cottage

And where exactly are we? Home. A structure so perfectly suited for our family of seven that I hesitate to call it a house. It genuinely already feels like home, and we can’t wait to move in!

OUR MINIMALIST COTTAGE

The design of Arrow Hill Cottage has forced us to look closely at the way our family lives. And to explore our spacial needs both now and in the future. We realized during this process that, in many ways, we are quite minimal. It is more important for us to have time together within the same spaces, rather than retreat to our own rooms. And the storing of rarely used items is not a priority for us either.

We were able to settle on a comfortable floor plan that is just over 2,000 finished square feet. This includes the basement, main and upper levels. It should meet our needs now, with five growing children, and also accommodate my husband and I with main floor living, as we age. There is even potential, when all the kids are grown and moved out, to rent out the lower level for additional income.

TAKE THE VIRTUAL TOUR

I encourage you to watch the video of our cottage. It is quite a bit longer than the typical video I put out, but there is a ton of information! And, I think it gives great insight into why certain design decisions were made. I hope you enjoy!

Be sure to keep checking back for more house progress updates in the near future!

Porch Essentials | Create a welcoming outdoor space

There is something special about a covered front porch. Today I am sharing the front porch essentials that can help you create a welcoming outdoor room.

Adding a welcoming front porch

This post contains affiliate links. As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. See my full disclosure here

Most people who see a home with a front porch will have a fond memory fill their minds. Perhaps the sight of a porch brings back feelings of family and gathering. Maybe it is a bit of nostalgia – longing for simpler times.

With summer right around the corner, and the anticipation of Arrow Hill Cottage being built, I have found myself really looking forward to spending time on the front porch. Though we won’t be able to enjoy the space until this time next year, I did a bit of research trying to figure out how we can make it as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

Below are the front porch essentials I believe make them special. I also share the products that can enhance each of these elements.

A SENSE OF WELCOME

To their very core purpose, porches provide a sense of welcome. They are the gateways from the hustle and bustle of the roadway to the peacefulness of indoors.

The most connected neighborhoods likely have homes that are outfitted with front porches.  Sadly, it is rare for homes to be built with front porches nowadays. It is much more typical to find a garage positioned closest to the street, with a rather small front door set back.

welcome sign for front porch

We were very careful, during the design of our cottage, to include a large covered front porch. Not only do we believe it improves the look of the house itself (see for yourself in this post), we also feel that it will make our home feel more welcoming to our friends and neighbors. Porches have a way of encouraging face to face conversations with neighbors.

Adding a welcome sign to a front porch is a great sentiment, as is a cherry welcome mat.

A PLACE TO CONVERSE

Once a person has stepped onto a front porch, they are going to want to stay a while. Almost guaranteed. Give yourself and your visitors that opportunity by providing plenty of seating.

A porch swing is classic, and a staple for most front porches. We will definitely be incorporating one!

A swing is essential for a front porch

Be sure to offer a variety of seating options. Placing a matching set of chairs opposite the porch swing, for example, can create a wonderful conversation spot. Provide a mix of rocking and stationary seating.

Proper seating in a variety of configurations is important

Large ottomans or plush outdoor pillows are great for little ones. They can easily be moved around, perhaps even serving as a small table for a snack, or to hold a book.

A SPOT TO RELAX

Your front porch should be an extension of your home’s interior. Soften it’s hard lines by adding cozy elements such as layered rugs and pillows. Don’t be afraid to have fun with color and pattern. These elements can also infuse a bit of excitement and playfulness to the porch space.

indoor outdoor pillows

AN ENTERTAINING SPACE

Porches also make great entertaining spaces. The purchase of a small beverage and snack cart can make a statement. Find one with wheels, so that it can easily be moved in and out of the house to be reloaded with snacks and drinks. An antique buffet or dresser can be set up in the milder weather months of the year, offering a more permanent entertainment solution.

entertaining on the front porch

A large drink dispenser allows guests to help themselves. You may even choose to refill the dispenser daily and keep it on the porch during the hot summer months, for family members to access when working and playing outdoors.

With proper seating provided, it is important to also include small tables where drinks can be placed. Nestle a table in between a set of chairs, or offer small serving trays that can be held on laps.

A CONNECTION TO NATURE

Another element that makes a front porch special is the connection it has to nature. Covered porches have a sheltering aspect, while also allowing users to feel the soft Summer breeze and smell the crispness of Fall air.

Try adding potted plants and small trees to the space. Hanging flower baskets are very popular among front porch owners.

potted plants and hanging baskets help connect to nature

One way we are planning to further connect the porch at Arrow Hill Cottage to nature is by incorporating a large planter. This project was the topic of much debate between myself and my husband. I think that I have won the battle, at least for now, and am very excited to see the planter come to life!

A SHELTER FROM OUTDOOR ELEMENTS

The outdoor experience can be enhanced by adding a bit of climate control to your front porch. This can be as simple as choosing appropriate lighting, to extend the usefulness of the space.

simple lighting

For the stuffy, hot summer afternoons, consider including a ceiling fan on the front porch. They can be found in a wide variety of styles.

porch ceiling fan

Though the ceiling of a covered porch will add some protection from the sun’s overhead rays, a set of sheer curtains can help filter light further. They may also have the added benefit of deterring bugs and proving privacy when closed fully.

I hope that these porch essentials and product suggestions were useful to you, and give you insight into some ways to make your space really shine! If you have a front porch that you love, I want to hear what you do to make it a go-to space. Please comment below with your tips!

Design Elements | Inspiration For Our New Cottage

Today I am excited to share with you a few of the design elements we are planning for our new cottage. Hopefully, by the end of this post you will have a good sense of what our finished interior space might look like.

Home design ideas for a newly built cottage

OUR FOREVER HOUSE

To be honest, I haven’t given a ton of thought to the interiors of any of the houses we have lived in. I think, in part, it is because I knew we would only be living in them temporarily.

This house though, being our forever house, has caused me to think more critically. We want to be very intentional about what we surround ourselves with.

antiques used in a cottage style home. vintage scale

MIXING OLD WITH NEW

Though we are building a brand new home, we feel it is important to incorporate items that have seen a bit more life, and wear and tear. The reason for this is twofold. Number one, we don’t want to feel that we can never touch anything, or be worried that our kids might break something.

Number two, we feel that a new house can seem a bit bland and stark if everything is perfect and new. A mix of found items can really help to give the interiors a casual, comfortable, and lived-in and vibe.

MAIN DESIGN ELEMENTS

There are four main categories of inspiration that I will be discussing: geometry, color, texture, and specialty items. They all work together to form an overall design style that is simple and orderly while also comfortable and casual.

Geometry

As an architecture major, I am fascinated with geometry. I love how simple lines and shapes can come together to form something interesting and beautiful.

One example of how we plan to incorporate geometric design into our new cottage is the five panel doors we have chosen. They mimic the pair of wooden doors we refinished last summer. I think they have a classic look that will pair well with the simple lines of the cottage.

Design elements for a comfortable cottage feel

This window also displays basic, yet interesting geometry. I saw it out of the corner of my eye one day when I was browsing through an antique shop. Though it was priced higher than I wanted to pay, I could not get my mind off of it. Eventually came home with me, and we have loved it ever since.

Color Scheme

When it comes to color theory, I am definitely one who prefers a mostly neutral palette, with pops of interesting color. Knowing what colors to ‘pop’ with has been something I have slowly learned through the years.

In fact, the realization of the color scheme for our new house came to me a bit by accident. A few years ago I purchased this simple pillow. It kind of spoke to me, even though I couldn’t really put my finger on why. The pillow has been a mainstay in our living room since that day, and every time I look at it I smile.

Interior design ideas incorporating neutral decor with pops of color

It wasn’t until recently that I realized that the pillow brings a couple of my very favorite design elements to life. The geometric pattern is simple, and pleasing to the eye. But also, the colors themselves are those I tend to gravitate toward. With the exception of the tan color, which I would replace with a mustard yellow.

Without even knowing it, I have been accumulating items with these colors and bringing them into our home.

This rust-red pitcher, for example, adds just the right amount of color. And the small lithograph print features many of my favorites.

vintage red pitcher

Texture

I am a huge fan of texture. More specifically, neutral texture. It is one of the reasons I am a sucker for a woven basket or a macrame wall hanging.

textured home decor

This pillow is one of the ways that I added a bit of texture to our home decor. I created a blog post a while back which details the steps to make one for yourself. I will be re-doing the video link in the near future. There have been people who have tried to make the project and have commented that the video could use a few more step by step instructions.

diy textured knot pillow

Other textured items might be really subtle. This pair of white bowls, for example, have a small bit of ribbing around their rims. I think this tiny bit of detail really adds visual interest to an otherwise ordinary piece.

vintage design elements incorporated into a brand new cottage home

Special Items

A house filled with generic, store bought items will not have the same feeling as one adorned with well loved items. Displaying items that bring you joy or remind you of someone you love is the perfect way to make a new house feel like home.

We have special items of all types that we plan to utilize at our new cottage. The cabinet in this vignette, for example, is one of a set that my husband painstakingly restored this past winter. He put so much effort into them, and they are absolutely stunning!

A cream can, saved from the run down farmstead of my great-grandparents, will become a special conversation piece in the cottage.

vintage cream can

This crate has been used as a toy box for many years by our children. We plan to bring it with us when we move. Although it may eventually be filled with different items, it will forever hold the memories of a time when our kids were younger and enjoyed it as a toy box.

We are so excited to see all of these design elements come to live in our new home! If you would like to be the first to know about the construction timeline, be sure to subscribe to my email newsletter. I will be sending out house information there first. Also, consider subscribing to the Arrow Hill Cottage YouTube Channel. There, I plan to post a house building update once per week, as soon as we break ground.

Thanks for stopping by! I enjoy sharing this journey with all of you!

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK

In this video, I do a little walk-through of each piece in the vignette. I describe the design elements and talk about each piece and how they represent the elements.

REFINISHED DINING CHAIRS IN 6 EASY STEPS

I’m happy to report that another item from my PROJECT BUCKET LIST is well underway. The dining chairs have begun their transformation from brown to black! And I am loving them!

First, a quick recap on what my plans are for these chairs.

For our future dining space at Arrow Hill Cottage, we are hoping to create a unique harvest table – partially out of lumber harvested from large trees on the property. This will be a long and narrow table, with seating for ten people. We want to make sure that we always have room for guests to dine with us.

Our dining space will be directly off of the kitchen – in an area of about 9′-0″ x 14′-0″. Not a very large space by any means. And so, in order to include seating for ten people, I intentionally searched for chairs that had a small profile.

I found the perfect chairs at a local antique store. This set of  8 had been recently refinished with stain.

An additional 2 matching chairs were were found at a different antique store. These chairs were not in as good of shape, and were covered in quite a few layers of paint – some of which had already begun to peel off.

I’ve decided that with a stained wood dining table, and stained hardwood floors – our chairs will look best painted black. I started the transformation process with the two brown painted chairs.

Today I will share the 6 simple steps that I used to refinish the first two chairs. Hopefully this post can serve as a guide to anyone planning a similar project!

STEP 1: REMOVE EXISTING PAINT LAYERS

These chairs were covered in many layers of paint. While you might be able to sand some furniture pieces down to the bare wood – that was not be possible with these chairs. A power sander would have changed the shape of the spindles. It also would not have been able to get into the small turned details.

Instead, I decided to use a stripping agent to remove the paint layers. I have had great results with  Citristrip Stripping Gel. It is powerful, but has a smell that isn’t overwhelming. Even still, you want to be sure to wear a face mask or respirator. Other items you will need for this step of the process is an inexpensive paintbrush, a small container to hold the gel, a scraping tool, a stiff scrub brush, a rag, and a bucket of warm soapy water (dish-washing soap works well).

Apply the gel liberally over all areas that need paint removed. Let it sit for approximately 30 minutes and you will notice the paint start to bubble and then turn white. At that time you can begin to scrape. You may want to experiment with different tools to find the right fit for your project. If using a metal scraper, be sure not to gouge into the wood with the sharp edge of the scraper.

In my experience, the paint will be stripped off one layer at a time. You will need to apply multiple applications of the gel to reach bare wood.

As the paint is coming off, I like to take a water/soap soaked rag and clean off the surface. This helps to get the more fine bits of paint that may be stuck between spindles, for example.

Repeat this process until you have reached the bare wood layer. At this point you will want to use your stiff brush to remove all extra debris.

Let the chair dry completely before beginning the next step.

STEP 2: SAND

As mentioned previously, it is not a good idea to use an electric sander on fine detailed pieces of furniture. Sanding by hand can be tedious, but it will yield the best results. Instead of using flat sandpaper, I prefer to use 3M sanding sponges. They don’t rip apart like traditional sandpaper sheets – and the beveled edges of the sponge work perfectly for the detailed sanding.

Sanding is pretty straightforward. Be checking to make sure the surfaces are feeling smooth and that the detailed areas are not still filled with paint.

STEP 3: CLEAN

Using a tack cloth, wipe all of the sanding dust off of the chair. Again, be sure to get into all of the detailed areas.

As a final cleaning measure, I like to dab a bit of mineral spirits onto a rag and wipe it over the wood that will be painted. It is a quick and easy task, but will get any last bit of gunk that may be left on the furniture piece.

STEP 4: PRIME

This step is the most often forgotten or eliminated, yet it is absolutely essential! The purpose of the primer is to give the paint the ideal surface to adhere to. Even if the paint you plan on using indicates that it is a paint + primer combo, add a coat of primer first. Wood that is primed before it is painted is much more durable and will hold up better than a piece that is covered only with paint.

Primer can be brushed on or sprayed. I personally love the ease and simplicity of spray paint. This Rust-Oleum flat black primer went on super smooth and in one coat. One can of primer was enough to cover both of the chairs I worked on. I set my chairs side by side on a set of saw-horses, which allowed me to get access to all parts of the chairs (including the underside) at one time.

Allow the primer to dry according to directions, then lightly sand with a fine grit sandpaper or sanding sponge and clean with a tack cloth before beginning the next step.

STEP 5: PAINT

Of course, this is when the real magic happens! Choose a color that suites your decor style. Again, I used a spray paint product – Rust-Oleum Black, in a Satin finish. I recommend a finish that is either satin, semi-gloss or gloss. A flat finish will showcase every imperfection your piece may have, and is generally not as durable.

Between each layer of paint, you should sand lightly with fine grit sandpaper and clean the dust off with a tack cloth to ensure that the surface is smooth.

STEP 6: SEAL

This final step is optional, but can be important – especially on furniture pieces that will be used on a daily basis. Sealing with a clear coat can give you a surface that more easy to wipe clean should the need arise. It also adds protection from nicks and dings.

If you choose not to add a sealer product, let the piece sit for a minimum of 30 days before use. This will cure the paint to it’s maximum potential. If you are sealing your piece, wait a minimum of 24 hours after the final coat of paint has dried.

I’ll admit that I have yet to complete this step on my chairs, but I will be adding the sealer. Heaven knows that dining chairs + kids = lots and lots of wiping clean!  I will be using a product similar to THIS to get the job done.

After applying the sealing coat, wait approximately 24-48 hours before using the piece.

Below are a few pictures of our newly refinished black chairs. They make my heart happy!

Two down and eight to go! I might work on one of the other items on my list first though, to give myself a little painting break.

MY FAVORITE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS THAT FEATURE POPS OF COLOR IN DECOR

Today I am finishing a three part series on COLOR THEORY and how it relates to home decor and design preferences. The basic belief is that people choose to use certain colors because of their own personalities as well as the mood that they want their home to convey. And, just as there are multiple preferences on how to furnish a home – there are variations on how color is used as well.

I have found there to be three main ways that people utilize color in their homes:

ONE: Neutrals Prevail

TWO: Pops of Color

THREE: Color Explosion

I have already featured interiors that showcase the idea of  COLOR EXPLOSION , as well as those where NEUTRALS PREVAIL.

Today though, is devoted to those interiors that are a combination of both. A little bit of neutral, and a little bit of color. Maybe this is the camp that people fall into when they just can’t make up their minds. They love color – but don’t want to over-do it; and yet they feel that keeping everything neutral is a bit boring and plain for their liking.

I’m especially excited about today’s feature because it happens to be the category that I would put myself in. I love how a mostly neutrally decorated space seems to come to life with a small infusion of color. The following Instagram accounts are swoon worthy, and feature this decorating technique well.

Note that each of these accounts seem to highlight specific colors or color combinations, which are most likely the owners favorites.

@happyhomeonhighbridge

Jennifer’s home is lovely and simple, yet is brought up a notch in drama by the combination of teal and coral that she tends towards. She has an amazing teal ship-lap wall in her dining room you need to check out!

@jogalbraithathome

It is apparent that Jo has a love for nature. The greens of her house plants serve as one of the main colors that she likes to ‘pop’ with. A complimentary Navy blue completes the palette. Her home seems casual and comfortable – as if anyone scrolling through could just hang out and chat.

@anettetalstad

Anette really loves color. Her amazing home features a variety of bright and pastel colors. The muted tones throughout are balanced with an even amount of sleek white. The tagline for her Instagram page is ‘happy home with a view’ – and yeah, she has a view all right. Go check it out!

These accounts are all gorgeous, right? I hope you have been inspired not only by today’s interiors, but those featured in the previous posts in this series also. After seeing examples of them all, which category would you say you fall into?

TRENDING IN HOME DESIGN & DECOR: ROSE GOLD ACCENTS

Brass, Silver, Bronze and Copper finishes have been commonplace in homes for many years. But there’s a new metallic in town that is taking center stage – Rose Gold.

No, it isn’t brand new. Rose Gold finishing has been around for quite some time, mainly in jewelry. However, in the recent years, it is having a moment trending in home decor and seems to be rising in popularity.

WHAT IT IS

Essentially, Rose gold is a mix of Copper and Gold. Pure gold has a natural yellow tone to it, and pure copper a reddish hue. When the two alloys are mixed together, coloring will appear more or less red – depending on the concentration of copper use. Rose gold has just a ‘touch’ of copper, and appears more on the pink side of the spectrum.

Where Blush / Millennial Pink seems to have been the ‘it’ color for the past three or so years, Rose Gold is getting in on the action – as it’s metallic cousin.

WHERE/HOW TO USE IT

The metallic is shiny enough to catch your eye and command importance, but pale enough to be almost considered a neutral – meaning that people are not afraid to mix it into a multitude of home decor applications. Rose gold accents are showing up all over the house – from furniture, to wall art and small appliances!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS HOME DESIGN TREND

I have to say that although I am intrigued by this additional metallic finish choice, I do feel that the rose gold trend is one that may not stand the test of time. To me, it just does not seem as classic as other finishes such as oil rubbed bronze and silver.

I could see myself adding a few touches of rose gold here and there to my home decor – a pillow, a picture frame, maybe a lamp. I personally have no intention of changing over more permanent aspects such as the kitchen faucet or the door hardware; But, if you love the look – I say go for it!
