AROUND HERE: JANUARY 2020

Around here, we have been…

LABORING. On, you guessed it…the house! The completion of one project seems to lead into another, in a seemingly never-ending cycle.

We are narrowing down to a firm final construction date, when we need to close our loan. With that date in mind, we are realizing that staying on task is going to be very important if we are going to get everything done in time!

SHOVELING a lot of snow. It just keeps coming down, and we are running out of places to put it.

At least the temperatures haven’t been super cold. And, having an attached garage has been amazing. So we aren’t complaining too much!

ENJOYING school activities. The boys are continuing their basketball season. Their teams play well together and both boys are both improving so much!

The kids are also coming home with a bunch of really cute art projects.

CELEBRATING the Lunar New Year. We kept things really low key this year, during all the hustle and bustle. Taking the family out to eat at the local Chinese Buffet was the perfect fit.

Of course, {M} knew exactly what she wanted to dig into first. The girl loves her noodles!

AROUND HERE | NOVEMBER 2019

Around here, we have been…

BUSY! If I could use one word to describe our lives at this moment in time, it would be this one. The days are speeding by so quickly it is as if they don’t even exist. With school, finishing the house, traveling for various activities and the holiday – we have been finding ourselves spinning.

To be honest, I genuinely hate being this busy. I do know that this is a season in our lives that will eventually pass. And with that knowledge, I am able to press on.

In the midst of all the craziness, our sweet {D} became a teenager! How have thirteen years passed so quickly? We are so proud of the young man he is becoming.

SEEING a lot of progress at Arrow Hill Cottage. Some of the bigger milestones that were hit this month include having our furnace hooked up to natural gas, installing the upstairs pine ceilings and the cabinets throughout the house, and getting a working bathroom!

We are doing a good chunk of the finish work ourselves, specifically all of the flooring. Craig already finished the basement vinyl plank floors and has moved onto the hardwoods. I am in charge of the tile work in two of the bathrooms. It is a bit slow going, but we are making progress and we can see a teeny tiny light at the end of this long tunnel.

MOVING our things to the new house! Though it isn’t quite ready for us to move into yet, we wanted to open up the rental farmhouse to the new renters before December first. Beating the snow and cold temps was also very important to us.

With our belongings safely in the garage, and the rental farmhouse all cleaned, we were invited to sleep during the night at Craig’s parents house. We are so fortunate to have family so near!

GIVING Thanks for all of our many blessings. We took a short trip to visit family over Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to be able to visit and just relax. Angela’s 95 year old grandma was able to join in the festivities and had so many amazing stories to share of her history.

The kids all had a great time with their cousins too, playing with play-doh and the vintage Nintendo game system.

AROUND HERE | SEPTEMBER 2019

Around here, we have been…

STARTING a new school year! All the kids are once again at the same school. It’s fun that they span in grades from Kindergarten to Seventh, and yet all still be together and see each other off and on throughout the day.

{M} was extra excited for her first year of full time school! She has been pretty tired though, so we are careful to make sure she gets naps in on the weekend.

CELEBRATING birthdays. Both of the girls have September birthdays. We decided on a new tradition this year by taking each child out on a date, with just with mom and dad. This one on one time has been awesome and means so much more to the kids than any presents could!

The girls also were able to choose a small gift. They went for art supplies and snacks. Nice choices!

PLAYING  a lot of football. Both {D} and {L} are in leagues. This is {D}’s first year of true tackle football. His real passion though is, of course, kicking! He has already had quite a few chances to kick extra points during the games, and hopes to get in a field goal or two before the season is over.

{L} is doing flag football and is learning the basic skills of the game.

In the evening, and on the weekends, Craig is busy with all three boys – outside playing two on two games. They have so much fun!

TAKING family pictures out at the new house. With the house starting to look a lot more like home, we thought it would be special to take our Fall family photos at the site.

We absolutely can not wait to live here! I’m sure we will cherish these pictures for many years to come.

AROUND HERE: JANUARY 2019

Around here we have been…

PLAYING basketball. The older two boys have been enjoying basketball season at their school. It is {I’s} first year to play, and {D}’s second.

They think it is fun being on a team together! We are really impressed with how much both of them have improved, and are proud of the hustle and good sportsmanship they show out on the court.

CONTINUING to tidy. One of Angela’s New Year’s Resolutions is to declutter the entire rental house before we break ground on Arrow Hill Cottage in the Spring. It is a hefty challenge, but we have already made great progress.

In January, she was able to get her magazine collection in order and simplify the linen closet.

Craig even got in on the action, and decluttered his clothing.

KEEPING warm. The temperatures over the last couple of weeks have been absolutely insane. In fact, school was even cancelled for a couple of days because of the dangerously cold temps and strong winds.

We were thankful to be able to cozy up inside our house, staying out of the elements. And we look forward to next winter when we will be enjoying Arrow Hill Cottage – and especially the Rec Room on these cold winter days!

TRYING new hairstyles. January seems to be the time of year our family members like to experiment with their hair. The boys all got fresh cuts and {M} tried some curls.

And…Craig shaved his beard off! We all couldn’t believe how different he looked right away! I bet with the cold that is here, he maybe wishes he had kept the beard a while longer!

AROUND HERE: DECEMBER 2018

Around here we have been…

DECLUTTERING our rental house. In preparation for our BIG MOVE into Arrow Hill Cottage in 2019, our family is working on minimizing our belongings. Because… well, nobody wants to haul a bunch of things they won’t use to a new house.

Angela went through a series of 4 decluttering challenges. She minimized the Christmas decor, found 60 items for the donation bin in just one hour, deep cleaned our laundry room and created her first capsule wardrobe. It was a busy month, but the jump start this gave us is keeping us motivated going into the new year.

decluttering clothing

We see our move as a clean slate of sorts, and it is our desire to live more simply and intentionally. If you are wanting the same for your family, consider subscribing to the Arrow Hill Cottage YouTube channel – where she is documenting our process. Perhaps you will be inspired.

SINGING our hearts out. The kids had so many programs in the month of December. We started right after Thanksgiving by singing at the fort with their school. They caroled around the community, and both {D} and {I} performed for the Jingle Bells Telethon.

Of course, there were plenty of school and Sunday School performances in the mix as well. Whew! It’s such a blessing to see them sharing their gifts with others.

CELEBRATING Christmas with extended family. Our group decided this year to go with a ‘no gifts’ event, and instead rent a house together – where we could hang out and play games, etc. This was absolutely the best decision ever. We all were so much more relaxed and enjoyed our time together immensely.

The weather was warm enough that we were able to spend time out on the frozen lake. Sled pulling, snow angel making, and attempted ice skating.

family sledding time

A very interesting thing happened. Not one of the  10 kids even ASKED about presents. We were all too busy having fun enjoying each other’s company. I’m loving this new tradition!

SHOVELING! A huge winter storm went through our area right after Christmas. It dumped over a foot of snow in our town, causing quite a mess! Poor Craig spent hours snowblowing the driveway, only to have it drift in by the morning.

frozen beard. icicles in the beard

The good news is that he was able to direct the snow toward the play fort, and the kids are creating their own sledding hill. If the weather ever warms up, they will use it.

The white snow sure does look beautiful though. Maybe a great reminder going into the New Year. Clean slates. New beginnings. We are so excited for 2019!

AROUND HERE: AUGUST 2018

Around here we have been…

HEALING. {K} had her follow up appointment to see how her hand is healing. The doctor was very happy with how things looked, but decided that it could use one more month in a cast. She was a bit bummed at the news, but we trust the doctor’s recommendation. If she were to fall on her wrist or thumb before it was completely healed, it could mean more surgery.

She chose a purple cast this time – for the Vikings.

MAKING memories with family. All three boys, Craig, and both grandpas were able to attend a pre-season Vikings game in Minneapolis. For both {I} and {L}, it was their first time at an NFL game. Sadly, the Vikings lost to the Jaguars and didn’t seem to play their best.

That didn’t seem to matter to the boys. They had fun all the same and came home with huge smiles on their faces.

ENJOYING the last days of summer. It really is hard to believe that summer is nearly over. It is going into the record books as one of the most enjoyable breaks we have ever had as a family. I was trying to figure out the reason it has been so great, and have come to the conclusion that it is likely because we have had no major life events this year. No moving to a new house, no adoptions, no adding of new family members. Just us and the gorgeous weather.

We have been spending the last couple of weeks at the Fireman Cabins here in our town. A stay there is a perk of the Fire Department. Craig had signed up for our stay before his retirement, so this – our 11th year – will be our last official stay.

We have always loved our time at the cabins. There is something so peaceful and relaxing about the setting.

PREPARING for the start of school. This school year, six of our seven family members will be spending time at school. Angela accepted a position as a part time pre-Kindergarten classroom aide. It just so happens that miss {M} will be in her class, something they are both pretty excited about. Angela has been doing training with her colleagues in preparation.

She has also been sorting through school supplies and divvying them up among the kids. It’s amazing how many pencils we have! Back to school open house was yesterday, when the kids were able to meet their teachers, find their lockers, and see where they will sit in their classrooms. They are probably most excited to spend more time with their friends, and not so much looking forward to the extra work load that is sure to come.

{K} worked very hard this summer to get through the list of sight words her teacher had given her. The goal was that if she was able to learn them all, she would be able to get her very own library card. She did it, and was all smiles!

The kids are also starting their school related activities. {D} is signed up for football again this year. He is excited to have Craig as one of his coaches! They look forward to a fun season of learning together.

It has been one full year since the ‘Around Here’ feature began on the blog – take a look back at August 2017’s happenings. There are a lot of similarities this year!

AROUND HERE: JULY 2018

Around here, we have been….

CELEBRATING with family. The fourth of July holiday has always been a special one for my family. Growing up, it was tradition to visit my grandparents and take in all of the small town festivities – parades with lots of candy, sparklers, and of course a ton of barbecued food. Now, going home, it’s fun to watch our kids doing some of the same things. It was wonderful to see both of my sisters and their families. I cherish these moments.

This year, my hometown was having an all school reunion the same weekend as the 4th of July festivities, and so I was able to catch up with two of my best high school friends, and meet their kids. It was a blast to wander around our old high school and bring up all of the memories (both good and bad) that were had there.

RECOVERING from surgery. As part of her arthrogryposis, some of {K}’s joints formed in unusual ways. The hand specialist she sees in the Twin Cities evaluated her left wrist and thumb and let us know that there is potential for both of them to be more functional, which could help her gain more independence. However, he also mentioned that the window of opportunity to improve these joints is limited, and that if not done in the next year or so they may be permanently stuck in the stiff and awkward position.

We did a lot of talking with {K} about what she wanted, and ultimately, though she was scared of having the surgery, she wanted to have it done so that she could have the best possible function. She also wanted the surgery for aesthetic reasons. Our little girl was very brave and although after her surgery she was in quite a bit of pain and discomfort, she is now is back to her happy self with her bright pink cast, which will be removed in August.

TRYING new things, and trying old things again. We gifted {D} a flight lesson coupon for his 11th birthday last November. He saved it, waiting until the weather was perfect to take to the sky. He had a wonderful experience and is excited to continue on his training.

Craig finally got his hands on a box of King Vitaman. It was his absolute favorite cereal when he was a kid, and he wanted to try it again to see if it was everything that he remembered. The cereal is still in production, but in very limited quantities. Buying it online is an option, but an expensive one that we were too cheap to invest in. His sister and her husband bought him a box as a birthday present, and he was pumped! See the video of his reaction to the first bite HERE.

STARTING to cross things off of the never-ending project list. Being renters for nearly 4 years, we haven’t had much to do in the home improvement realm. It’s been a nice little break, but as we are preparing to build Arrow Hill Cottage in the not too distant future, our thoughts are once again turning to DIY. I organized a list of projects that I want to tackle for our new home.

I have to admit it feels pretty good to be getting my hands dirty again, and the kids have even gotten into the action.  We will see if we can finish all of these tasks before we break ground!

AROUND HERE: MAY 2018

Around here we have been…

FINISHING SCHOOL. It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has already arrived! All five kids have worked very hard in their studies and are ready to move onto the next grade level. The end of school year activities – school softball games, class field trips, and programs have been keeping us very busy.

RUNNING AND JUMPING at track meets. May also kept the kids in good shape. There was a 5th grade District meet, in which {D} participated. All of the kids, besides {M} were also able to take part in a track and field day for Lutheran Schools in Perham. Angela helped with the school track club and was able to assist in the track meet that Zion school put on for 5th – 8th grade Christian schools in our area.

As parents we are very happy with how hard our kids tried at their events – and even that they were able to come in in first place in some of them; But more importantly, we are proud of the sportsmanship that they displayed with their teammates and other athletes.

CELEBRATING Mother’s Day. Each year, Angela requests only one thing – pictures with her clan. This year the weather was absolutely gorgeous, and so we set the timer on the camera and lined up. The pictures turned out better than we ever imagined – in fact, we love them so much that we are considering having them printed to hang on our gallery wall!

GETTING the yard summer ready. After a long winter of shoveling snow and avoiding ice patches in the yard, we were excited to get the lawn mowers out, trim the bushes, and to plant a few flowers. Angela is happy that have the landscaping project from last summer behind her. It feels great to be able to enjoy the outdoors without being all bundled up! Soon there will be beach trips and water balloon fights!

AROUND HERE: JANUARY 2018

Around here we have been…

WATCHING {D} as he learns to play basketball. He was nervous going into the season, not having any prior experience; But he has grown in confidence and skill. The moment he scored his first ever two-pointer he was beaming with pride. We are proud of the hustle and persistence he shows out on the court.

We are thankful for his teammates, some of who are much more experienced in the game, for their encouragement.

COMPLETING puzzles. For some reason January tends to be puzzle month in our house. It is probably mostly because of the cold temperatures and the fact that we spend much more time indoors. Every weekend this month we have had a puzzle going, with the kids contributing their help now and then and the adults working diligently after the kids are in bed.

A couple of the kids also enjoy working on their own smaller puzzles. {I} and {K} will sit down and complete a 150 piece puzzle in one sitting.

SICK. A bug has been going around at school, and a couple of the kids were struck with it – as was Craig. Tis’ the time of year for sickness, and we only hope that it passes quickly. Being sick is no fun.

UPSET by the ending of the Vikings football season. They had a good chance to play at the Superbowl, which is going to be taking place this coming weekend in Minneapolis – their home turf. They lost the Championship game to the Eagles, after winning on a last second touchdown the week before. Kind of a heartbreaking end to the season.

We know that it is ‘just a game’ and although we feel disappointed, we are thankful for the entertainment this football team has given our family. We look forward to next season and hope they can make it all the way!

FREEZING, but still participating in winter activities. January was a very frosty month, but we still managed to spend time outside. Craig had a couple of very cold fire calls, and ended up with a frosty beard.

There is still not much snow, but the kids have been taking what they can and have built a small snow fort in the yard. They were also able to go skiing with school.

FRONT ENTRYWAY DESIGN IDEAS

A front entrance for guests is a great feature to add to any home. It doesn’t need to be a large space, but having it laid out well is important. Today I am sharing the front entryway design ideas I have for Arrow Hill Cottage.

Although our home will have an attached garage, and our family is most likely to enter and leave in that direction, I wanted to make sure to include a straightforward front entrance – where we expect visitors to enter. I’m not sure about you, but our garage has a tendency to become cluttered and dirty far faster than any other space we own – and we don’t want our visitors to experience our day to day.

ENTERING FROM OUTSIDE

As you can see in this image, the front door will have a prominent position. Although the house is not symmetrical, your eye is drawn to the small gable above the door.

creating a charming front entryway

In case you noticed… yes, I am still #teamplanter, and it remains as part of the design, at least for now. If you have no idea what I’m talking about – go ahead and visit THIS POST to learn all about the debate.

The large stone pillars and double columns frame the view.  I’m sure there will be some sort of feature light fixture here also, but I haven’t made any decisions on that yet. And yes, I am dreaming of a light blue bead-board ceiling for the porch. Love.

cottage front entrance. Covered porch with sweet and simple front entry

I have chosen a solid wood door. Because there will be windows directly next to and above it (transom), I felt that including a smaller pane of glass within the door itself would complicate the arrangement. The windows should provide plenty of natural light (this wall will be south-west facing)

INSIDE THE ENTRYWAY

Stepping through the door, you are welcomed with a space approximately 6 feet deep by 12 feet wide. The room is partitioned from the dining room by a pair of built-in cabinets and columns.

front entryway with custom built ins and columns used to divide space

We will likely have our builder or cabinet maker create these cabinets and columns, but This Old House wrote a fantastic post about how you can make this a DIY project. I purposely chose to offset the built-in slightly from the alcove since the wall finish and the cabinet finish will be different. This will help eliminate a clumsy transition from cabinet to wall. The baseboard trim will help to tie everything together.

front entryway design ideas for our new home. Simple white bench in front entryway

As I mentioned in this post, we have found that with fewer closets we are less likely to hold onto items we don’t need. This entry is indeed the perfect opportunity to live that theory. Because most of our family’s shoes, coats and bags will be coming in through the back entry / mudroom, we won’t need much for storage near the front entry. Instead of using the recessed space as a closet, I am opting to leave the alcove open and instead will incorporate a bench with simple hooks and a shelf above.

simple front entryway design ideas

This alcove also lends itself to the inclusion of a feature wall. At the moment, I am thinking that beautiful rustic barn wood would serve as the perfect surprise. The feature wall will serve as a backdrop for a family photo gallery.

This post, from the blog Ivory Lane , has given me a ton of inspiration for the entryway gallery. I love the simple nature of the metallic frames, white picture mats, and black and white images.

ACCESSORIES + DETAILS

On top of the small shelf above the coat hooks, I envision some cute artwork that represents our family. These number squares are amazing.

I also love sentimental signs and would love to work something like this into the entryway space.

Opposite the bench area is where I envision our piano being placed. We own a low grade piano that is natural wood and wood grain veneer at the moment. I would love to paint it a soft gray color and decorate it with special accessories – such as the vintage green cottage window that I recently purchased at an antique store. I know there is some debate about painting pianos, but they make it look so easy on Pinterest, and I am really intrigued by the results.

piano positioned in front entryway

Nobody in our family is a concert pianist, but we do enjoy having a piano to tinker around on. In this location it is available, but set aside so that it isn’t in the way of other daily activities.

For the center of the room I would like to find a special light fixture. I am thinking something with a metallic finish, probably a hanging pendant.

Perhaps something from this collection would work well.

The floor will require some sort of durable rug that will mostly protect the wood floors. I love the idea of a black and white patterned rug.

ADDITIONAL ENTRYWAY VIEWS

And now for a few more views of the entryway. First, a view from above – one that nobody will ever experience in real life. It shows the overall space well.

front entryway floor plan layout

A view from the kitchen (standing near the stove) looking toward the entry. You can see the kitchen design in this post. The space between is the dining room, of which I am still working on designing. The only thing I know for sure is that I want to include some sort of antique hutch on the long wall.

view of front entryway from the kitchen

Another room that is still a blank slate is the living room. Besides knowing that I want to include a large sectional sofa for our large family, there are still a lot of decisions to be made here. This is a view of the entryway as seen from the living room. Again, that large open space will eventually house our dining table.

front entryway design ideas. open concept floorplan layout

I am really loving how the main level is laid out. The flow seems like it will work well for our family. In this image you can see the stairs leading to the bedrooms (up) and the family room (down). That blank spot at the landing is where the largest window of the house will be positioned. I’m excited to see the design of the stairs come together.

Maybe I will work on that next!

UPDATE: Our floorplans changed quite a bit since this was originally posted. You can see our revised design HERE.
